This coming Sunday, July 19, is the 29th anniversary of FINAL FANTASY IV’s release in Japan!
FFIV marked not only the first appearance of the ATB (Active Time Battle) system, one feature that would eventually come to represent the FINAL FANTASY series, but was also the first FINAL FANTASY released on SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System)! FFIV is symbolized beautifully by the song “Theme of Love” from its soundtrack, and the many ways love is conveyed through its story and characters make for an unforgettable journey.
And the main character of FFIV is none other than Cecil! Our protagonist starts the story as a dark knight but, morally unable to continue following the orders he receives, leaves the country he fought for to reconcile his past transgressions. Eventually, Cecil is given the chance to fight the demons of his past and become a paladin.
"Stay back. This is a fight for me and me alone."
Stated by Cecil when his comrades attempt to join him in the battle against his former self, this line demonstrates Cecil’s resolution to right his wrongs, overcome his past and become a better person. Anyone who has played FFIV surely remembers this line!
