The long-awaited Magic: The Gathering — FINAL FANTASY set will soon release on June 13! In anticipation of this exciting event, we're introducing some of the cards in the set – sixteen articles for sixteen mainline games in the series!
The elements we showcase here range from iconic characters to defining moments—aspects that encompass the essence of the FINAL FANTASY franchise.
For our second showcase, we’d like to show you two cards from FINAL FANTASY II.

“Firion, Wild Rose Warrior” features the protagonist of FINAL FANTASY II. In the wake of his hometown being razed by the Palamecian Empire, which seeks to conquer the entire world, Firion joins a rebel organization known as the Wild Rose. The illustrations depict him wielding a few different weapons, calling back to the weapon leveling system that FINAL FANTASY II utilizes.

On the other hand, we have “Commune with Beavers,” focusing on an iconic moment from the game. Having set out to the Snow Cavern to retrieve the Goddess’s Bell, one of the three core party members, Guy, takes a moment to ask the native beavers for their help in ascertaining the item’s whereabouts.

If you would like to learn more about FINAL FANTASY II’s unique growth system or listen in on Guy’s conversation with the beavers, we definitely recommend giving this FF classic a try.
We’ve received some additional comments on them from Magic: The Gathering’s very own Principle Narrative Game Designer: Dillon Deveney!
Firion, Wild Rose Warrior
The Japanese box art for FINAL FANTASY II is so amazing and gives Firion such immediate personality and a sense of heroism. We wanted to ensure we captured the classic pose of him raising the sword before his face as a nod to the box art, but we had to update the pose slightly so players could see his full face in the art we made of him in-world. The moment we depicted shows Firion fully geared up and ready for the end game!
Commune with Beavers
Yoni Skolnik, the Principal Game Designer who led design vision for this set, pitched this card early on and both Gavin Verhey and I loved it! "Commune with [X]" has become a tradition for green sorcery spells that have similar effects. "Guy speak beaver" is such a funny, charming, lovable line and a perfect moment of whimsy to capture. Everyone who play tested this card loved the flavor and constantly told us how much joy it brought them. I love how the beavers turned out in the art! So cute!
Magic: The Gathering — FINAL FANTASY will be available for purchase on June 13. Until then, why not come (re-)familiarize yourself with the world of FINAL FANTASY? If you simply can’t wait, be among the first to play with the collaboration cards via prerelease at authorized retailers come Friday, June 6!
FINAL FANTASY II
The ruthless emperor of Palamecia leads his demonic armies across the land, laying waste to all in his path. One by one the nations fall, and those without the will to resist are forced into servitude. When the conflict reaches the borders of Fynn, its people choose to fight, and are all but annihilated. After the loss of Castle Fynn, the survivors flee to nearby Altair, where the rebellion makes a temporary headquarters.
Among the survivors are Firion, Maria, and Guy; rescued by the rebel leader Princess Hilda and the white mage Minwu. Though young and implusive, they gain Hilda's trust and are allowed to join her battle against the empire. While the road ahead may be paved with loss and sacrifice, each victory brings them closer to reclaiming their homeland.
