The FFTCG, enjoyed by players all over the world, is getting a new booster pack titled “Journey of Discovery” on Friday, November 14th!
We’ve decided to give you all a first look at two of the new cards here on the FF Portal Site.
We also have a message to share from FFTCG producer, Tarou Kageyama as well as the illustrators who handled the cards’ art.
A Sneak Peek at Journey of Discovery
Hello, everyone! I’m Tarou Kageyama, producer of FFTCG.
This time I’d like to showcase a pair of new cards from Journey of Discovery, which is slated for release on November 14. One is [27-014H] Terra with art from Fumio Minagawa, and the other is [27-092H] Ultimecia with artwork drawn by Gen Kobayashi.
【27-014H】Terra
Let’s start with a closer look at [27-014H] Terra. Keep an eye out for the special version, complete with the artist’s foil-stamped signature!

What do you think? Notice the way the pale blue light of her magic plays off her subtle expression, as well as the water’s reflection at her feet. It all comes together to create a mystically captivating work of art. Plus, on the special edition, those elements are nicely offset by the gold foil of the signature.
This is an enchanting card no matter which version you get, and just might become your new favorite.

Of course, a card isn’t just a piece of collectible art—its in-game performance matters, too.
[27-014H] Terra has a cost of 4, a power of 5000, and is a Fire forward. Her auto-abilities trigger upon entering the field and when casting a Wind or Lightning card.
The ability upon entering the field reveals the top two cards of your deck. From those, you add up to one Fire card and up to one Wind or Lightning card to your hand and put any leftovers into the Break Zone. Getting both revealed cards into your hand could give you an edge, if you can manage it. Reliably adding two cards every time could be tricky since you’ll need to set up your deck with at least two elements, not just Fire like Terra herself, so you can make use of the Wind/Lightning slot.
[27-014-H] Terra’s other ability gives you an edge if you do use Wind or Lightning (or both!).
That is, you can choose to dull your active Terra whenever you cast a Wind or Lightning card. When you do that, you then select one Forward and deal it 8000 damage. That means you can easily dish out a whopping 8000 damage just by casting Wind or Lightning while she’s active. It’s hard to see any downside. Imagine the pressure you could put on an opponent if you happened to reveal a Wind or Lightning card with her first ability.
【Comments from the Illustrator: Fumio Minagawa 】
It took some trial and error to get her facial expression just right, but I’m happy with the result.
My original draft showed her reflection in the water as Trance Terra, but that didn’t fit the available space and had to be cut. If only it had worked!
【27-092H】Ultimecia
Next up, here’s Gen Kobayashi’s [27-092H] Ultimecia card. The lighting effects on this one are striking, especially the way the flame-red glow serves to bring out Ultimecia’s bewitching aura.

Notice the color gradient in the full-art version. This is truly a profile worthy of a Sorceress—ensorcelling in a single glance.

Now, let’s shift focus to in-game performance. [27-092H] Ultimecia has a cost of 4, power of 8000, and is a Water Forward. She only has one auto-ability, but it’s quite a powerful one.
When Ultimecia enters the field, you have the opportunity to remove three Category VIII cards in your Break Zone from the game. When you do so, choose one Forward and gain control of it. After that, put it in the Break Zone, unless you pay 1 CP per CP cost to cast it.
This ability should be easy to leverage since not only can the three category VIII cards you remove be summons or monsters, but also because Journey of Discovery includes several Category VIII cards. Keeping control of the Forward you select does cost extra CP, but declining to pay simply puts the card into the Break Zone, which means you can still take it off the field. Naturally, since you’ll have gained control, you can take advantage of any auto-abilities the card has that trigger upon entering the Break Zone. Ultimecia has great synergy with other Category VIII cards, such as [6-041L] Rinoa. Be sure to put her in your deck if you already have Rinoa.

【Comment from the Illustrator: Gen Kobayashi】
I played a lot of FFVIII when it first came out. It was a memorable experience, so I’m always excited to draw the characters for FFTCG.
This time, it’s Ultimecia, the Sorceress of the Future and final boss.
There isn’t much official art of her from different angles–in fact she seems to usually face forward. I decided it was time to draw her in profile and pictured the moment when she’s about to face off with the main characters.
I also kept in mind the idea that she’d make a good pair with the Edea card I drew, as well. Try looking at them side by side!
That’s all for this time! Journey of Discovery has a lot more wonderful artwork to see, so have fun collecting these cards!
What is FFTCG?
FFTCG is a one-on-one tactical card game featuring FINAL FANTASY characters and summons. Not only is there fun in collecting cards featuring familiar faces, the main draw of the game is the simplicity of the rules combined with the complexity of the gameplay. The art drawn for the game by famed illustrators is also a popular aspect of FFTCG!
