A Sneak Peek at Tears of the Planet
Greetings, everyone! This is FFTCG producer Tarou Kageyama. Approximately once every four months, I have the opportunity to highlight some of the FFTCG cards contained within the upcoming set just before their official release. Thanks once again for tuning in!
This time, I'd like to talk about two cards from Tears of the Planet, on sale starting March 28th: [25-006L] Cloud, illustrated by Miki Yamashita, and [25-104L] Yuna, illustrated by Mihoko Ishii!
[25-006L] Cloud
We’ll take a look at [25-006L] Cloud first. Let's get started, shall we?

The cool pose with the iconic buster sword over his shoulder, the steely-eyed gaze, the mysterious background that evokes the lifestream...and at the front and center of it all, Cloud himself. The illustration does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of the original work, doesn't it? Let us take a moment to appreciate Ms. Yamashita’s amazing illustration before going on to discuss the card’s stats.

[25-006L] Cloud has a cost of 5 and a power of 9000. Although he tends to typically be Lightning or Earth-aligned, this time he’s a Fire Forward! As for [25-006L] Cloud's abilities, he has just one auto-ability that will trigger when he is placed on the field. However, it's quite the powerful one! It allows you to choose two out of four actions, and depending on which ones you select and how you use them, there is ample potential to turn the tide.
- Choose 1 Forward. Deal it 8000 damage.
- Choose 1 Monster. Break it.
- Choose up to 2 cards in your opponent's Break Zone. Remove them from the game. Draw 1 card.
- Play 1 Category VII Character of cost 4 or less from your hand onto the field.
As explained, his ability can efficiently counter Forwards, Monsters, and/or cards in your opponent's Break Zone as you see fit. His fourth action can be used quite advantageously as well. Not only can you use it to bring another Forward to the field, but you can also use it to bring a Backup or a Monster. For example, you could use [25-006L] Cloud to bring out [22-004H] Angeal, then trigger his Job SOLDIER ability, leading to a very satisfying play. The Tears of the Planet pack contains a number of Category VII character cards with a cost of 4 or less, so I hope everyone is excited to see what kind of synergies can be created from them.

[Comments from the Illustrator: Miki Yamashita]
I wanted to illustrate something that was very representative of Cloud, so I incorporated a few elements that are quite integral to his character, like his buster sword, Sephiroth, and the lifestream.
I paid special attention to his eyes to emphasize his SOLDIER-like sharp gaze. I hope you will enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed illustrating it.
[25-104L] Yuna
Next up, I'd like to talk about [25-104L] Yuna, illustrated by Mihoko Ishii.

As you can see from the illustration, the Yuna featured on this card is her appearance in FINAL FANTASY X-2. The illustration does well to depict her innate cuteness while still capturing her mature, stronger spirit. I'd love a poster of the full piece!

Let's have a look at [25-104L] Yuna's stats. [25-104L] Yuna is a Light Forward with a cost of 2 and a power of 5000. She has one modal action ability. Compared to other Forwards, Light and Dark units tend to either have higher power or stronger abilities. [25-104L] Yuna's power of 5000 and cost of 2 are fairly average, which means her ability should be something to look forward to!
Yuna's action ability has a unique cost. Rather than spending CP or Crystals, it requires you to dull two currently active Forwards (Yuna herself can be chosen as one of the two). When doing so, you cannot use your opponent’s Forwards to pay this cost, so beware! You can then choose one of the following three actions:
- Choose up to 2 Forwards. Dull them.
- Choose 1 Character. Freeze it.
- Choose 1 Summon or auto-ability. If your opponent doesn't pay 1 CP, cancel its effect.
What do you think? Pretty good, right? Dulling two Forwards isn't a bad price to pay for any of these actions. However, if you look closely, there's another thing you may notice. That's right, nothing says you can't use any of these actions more than once per turn! Even if you dull [25-104L] Yuna as part of the cost, as long as you have enough Forwards, you can use her ability as much as you'd like!
If you have at least 4 Forwards available, then you can dull 4 Forwards during your opponent's turn to make it easier for your attacks to get through on your turn. Alternatively, you can also freeze a few of your opponent's Backup cards and throw a wrench into their plans. Even should the other player have a powerful Summon in their hand, you can use Yuna alongside a few of your own active Forwards to make it difficult for them to play it. [25-104L] Yuna's ability also lacks a dull icon, so you can use her ability as soon as she's played to the field. You can make her into a formidable threat by combining her with elements that activate Wind Forwards too. She definitely has a lot of potential and room to build a deck around.
[Comments from the Illustrator: Mihoko Ishii]
Yuna gets quite a major outfit change in FINAL FANTASY X-2. I wanted to highlight how spirited she becomes with this change, while preserving her feminine grace and lithe strength.
Those are the two cards I wanted to talk about today. What do you think? The illustrations are amazing as well, so I hope they’ll will be well-received and well-loved. That’s it for this edition, I’ll see you again next time!
What is FFTCG?
FFTCG is a one-on-one tactical card game featuring FINAL FANTASY characters and summons. Not only is there fun in collecting cards featuring familiar faces, the main draw of the game is the simplicity of the rules combined with the complexity of the gameplay. The art drawn for the game by famed illustrators is also a popular aspect of FFTCG!
